This book has a haunting quality that almost defies description. It is an amalgam of the diaries of Maude Richardson and the letters of Reginald Smee, from 1888 to 1910. these in themselves would not be unique, for letters and diaries from the earliest days of white settlement in Australia are by no means unusual and are acknowledged sources of social history research. But these family documents are presented with a special sensitivity by their daughter, Dorothy Hulme-Moir, enlivened with imaginative or remembered dialogue and are authenticated by a wise choice of historical background......(from foreword by Jessie M Scotford, O.B.E.)
